Take the “P” out of our Watershed!
Memphremagog Watershed Association (MWA) will be holding its Annual Meeting on June 22 at 7:00 PM in Room 250 of the Hebard Building, Main Street Newport. MWA’s 2016 theme is ‘Take the “P” out of our watershed’ or the reducing the phosphorous (P) being introduced into the Memphremagog Watershed and ultimately into our Lakes. In keeping with this theme the keynote speaker for our meeting will be Farley Brown of Sterling College. Ms. Brown will discuss the history of farming in our watershed and its impacts past, present, and future. Ms. Brown is an engaging and knowledgeable speaker who has had a connection to the land since she was young, through her family business, the Farley Lumber Company, and exploring the woods in the suburbs of New Jersey. “I have always questioned how we make land use decisions and who gets to make those decisions. Most importantly, how can we become the best stewards of the land?” Her passion for the land led her into the nonprofit field where she served as the executive director of both Vermont Woodlands Association and Vermont Coverts: Woodlands for Wildlife for several decades. She has worked with landowners, logger, and legislators throughout Vermont helping to protect the working landscape and wildlife habitat. She has witnessed the growth of the land conservation movement in Vermont over the past 25 years. Farley started teaching ecology at Sterling College and several state colleges in 1989 as an adjunct faculty member and came to Sterling full time in 2006. Come and enjoy an evening discovering our landscape and how its uses can enhance us all.
Brief reports on MWA’s current activities and partnering’s will also be presented. Following Ms. Brown’s presentation light refreshments will be served allowing for informal discussion with the speaker and among the audience. A business meeting for MWA members will close the evening.
