Let’s talk about Blue/Green Algae!

Cyanobacteria, also known as “blue green algae,” is a major public concern, especially with increasing warmer temperatures and nutrient loading into Vermont lakes and ponds. Being informed about cyanobacteria blooms and the potential environmental and health impacts is critical as we venture into our lakes and ponds this summer….

Cyanobacteria are tiny microorganisms that are a natural part of freshwater ecosystems. Under certain conditions, cyanobacteria can multiply quickly, create blooms on the water’s surface and wash up along shorelines. They can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals….

On July 24,2024, MWA hosted a Cyanobacteria Symposium to help the public learn more about both the historical and current issues that cause cyanobacteria blooms. This symposium was an opportunity to learn from a diverse group of experts in the field of cyanobacteria. Topics included what cyanobacteria is, how have our historical and current land use trends led to the current issues with cyanobacteria, and what are the drivers of nutrient loading that has led to more frequent algae blooms? You can watch the full symposium here.
