BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Casella is unveiling a pilot program aimed at getting customers to recycle more.
“We have seen Vermonters do an excellent job of doing what’s right with their waste stream. This is an opportunity to really sort of take it to the next step, looking at things like multi-layered packaging,” said Jeff Weld of Casella.
The Vermont Reptile and Amphibian Atlas is seeking photo submissions or recordings of Wood Frogs from Newport Town. They have reports of Wood Frogs from all towns, cities, gores, and grants in Vermont except Newport Town. They have reports of Wood Frogs within Newport City boundaries, but not from outside the city but within the town boundaries. They are confident that Wood Frogs are found within Newport Town, it is just that they have not yet been documented. They encourage you to document this species in Newport Town and help them fill in this distribution gap in their maps.

The Memphremagog Watershed Association recently completed a stormwater improvement project on Farrant and Lake Streets in Newport City. The improvements now collect and treat stormwater runoff from nearly 125 acres uphill of Prouty Bay and the Newport Marina. On the latest installment of the Vermont Edition series Animal Hour, Mikaela Lefrak was joined by Declan McCabe, a biologist from St. Michael’s University in Colchester, and renowned wildlife tracker and naturalist Sue Morse of Jericho. They discussed how to identify big cat species, be it a mountain lion, lynx, or bobcat.

The Islands of Lake Memphremagog
This 35-minute documentary by Louise Abbott explores the natural and human history of the twenty-one islands in Lake Memphremagog—a lake that lies mostly in Quebec but partly in Vermont. Because of their isolation, islands tend to be hotspots for biodiversity. So, it’s encouraging to note that since the film was made, the Nature Conservancy of Canada has acquired Molson Island. It also owns Long Island.
